PURPOSE:
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Program is a program
offered by Saint John’s Baptist Church to acknowledge students
who embrace the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The
program provides financial assistance for students pursuing
higher education who are committed to social justice, and have
demonstrated leadership or active participation in community
service.
ELIGIBILITY
Members of Saint John’s Baptist church and residents of the City
of Woburn are eligible to apply for the scholarship. All
candidates must be pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees at
an accredited college or university. Prior recipients of the
scholarship are not eligible to reapply for an award. Candidates
who applied for the scholarship in previous years and did not
receive an award may reapply.
AWARDS
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship award will be
presented to recipients January 15, 2008 at the Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Luncheon. The scholarship is non-renewable. The
amount of the funds available for the scholarship shall be
determined by the board of trustees and approved by the
membership of Saint John’s Baptist Church.
APPLICATION PERIOD AND DEADLINE
The scholarship selection committee will be accepting
applications from November 30, 2007 to January 11, 2008. An
application postmarked by January 11 insures acceptance of the
application. No exceptions or extensions will be made beyond
January 11, 2008.
SELECTION
Scholarship applicants are recommended for awards by a review
committee, which will meet during the review process to evaluate
applications on the following criteria: 1. Academic achievement
2. Personal qualities and strengths 3. Letters of recommendation
4. 5. Interview. Essay All candidates will be notified of their application
status approximately one week following the deadline.
Notifications
are final and irrevocable.
INTERVIEW
Applicants may be requested to participate in an interview with
the scholarship selection committee during the review process.
TRANSCRIPT
Submit an official transcript and scores from any valid,
reliable instrument used to measure scholastic aptitude,
interest and/or achievement.
ACCEPTANCE LETTER
Submit a letter of acceptance from the institution where you
plan to matriculate. This letter must be provided prior to
awarding the funds.
REFERENCES
Submit two letters of recommendations. At least one
recommendation should reflect academic credentials and one
recommendation should reflect community service.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Submit a one paragraph biographical sketch describing
achievements, community service involvement, current higher
education status, and career goals.
ESSAY
Each applicant must submit a 500-word essay responding to the
following quotation: “The ultimate test of a man is not where he
stands in moments of comfort and the moments of convenience, but
where he stands in moments of challenge and moments of
controversy.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Atlanta, January
27, 1965 For identification purposes, please include the
applicant’s name and birth date on the essay.
APPLICATIONS
The complete application, transcript, essay and recommendations
must be submitted by January 11, 2008, and sent to the following
